The Challenge
Iridescent Stones needed a way to organise a large gemstone catalogue so visitors could move from broad browsing to a narrower shortlist without losing context. The challenge was not just visual presentation, but product discovery: users arrive with partial knowledge, different levels of expertise, and different questions about colour, hardness, transparency, crystal system, lustre, and optical effects. The experience had to support search, comparison, and guided identification across a catalogue of 250 gemstones while keeping the route to full profiles straightforward.
Our Approach
The strategy was to treat the site as a discovery system rather than a simple listings page. Instead of forcing one browsing path, the implementation offers a searchable gemstone catalogue, browse-by-colour and browse-by-hardness entry points, discovery hubs for focused exploration, and an identification workflow that asks users to select as many observable characteristics as they know. That structure lets visitors start from the attribute they already understand and move through the same underlying taxonomy toward a better match.
What We Did
The experience is built around a layered catalogue hierarchy. The search page combines a text search field with native filters for colour, hardness, and crystal system, plus a clear reset action. Search results present each gemstone as a compact card with the stone name, a short summary, Mohs hardness, crystal system, and colour tags so users can compare entries quickly. The broader catalogue and discovery hubs reinforce the same pattern by surfacing colour-based and hardness-based browse paths, featured gemstone collections, popular entries, and recently added stones. The identification tool extends that logic with structured property matching for colour, transparency, hardness, crystal system, lustre, and optical effects. Together, those decisions create a consistent browse-to-detail flow without hiding the underlying catalogue structure.
